Romans 8:28-30 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
What a comforting word from our Father God! All things work together for good. Oh! How I love to hear those words while facing a hardship. It is such a relief to know that God is working out all of life’s misfortunes for my sake!
Have you ever stopped to wonder what “good “ the writer is talking about? Let’s consider the man who wrote the above scripture. Paul was shipwrecked, beaten, left for dead, walked many miles on foot to spread the gospel and was initially rejected by church leaders.
How about the lady who helps us with housekeeping? The electricity and water only work one day per week for about 30 minutes at her house! Imagine what life must be life for her three children as they bathe each morning. Yet, she is always singing hymns and praises to God.
Then I think of our own family. Transitioning to a new country, missing our loved ones from the states and continuously having to learn and adjust to something new does not feel good!
But we know that vs. 28 does not stand alone, for the “good ” that He is promising us is to become like His Son! You see, the good is not temporal. It is not something that this world could provide! He is promising to use the difficulties we face to make us like His Son. He wants us to be His Son’s siblings! He died, so shall we. Yet the comfort is in knowing that He got up from the grave, so shall we! The cross and the tomb are temporary, but the fashioning into the likeness of our Christ will last forever!
As we quote Romans 8:28, be sure to include the next two verses as well. They all work together. God wants us to take our eyes off of ourselves and to put them on Him. Allow Him to use your trial to make you more like His Son, then you experience the good life!
